Where to Buy Shinkansen Tickets: Official Sites or a Booking Service?

Where should you buy Shinkansen tickets?
You can buy Shinkansen tickets through an official JR reservation service, a third-party booking service, or eligible station ticket machines and counters. For Tokyo–Kyoto–Shin-Osaka and onward travel on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, SmartEX is an official option. Choose a seller that covers your exact journey and clearly explains the total price, ticket issuance, boarding method and change conditions.
Before paying: confirm the actual stations, whether your seat is confirmed or requested, and whether you will board with a paper ticket, an issued boarding QR, or a supported IC-linked reservation. A payment receipt or ticket pickup code alone is not a boarding ticket.
Official website, booking service or station: which should you choose?
| Channel | Useful for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Official JR service | Buying directly through a railway reservation system that covers your route. | Route coverage, account and card requirements, product rules, and supported collection or ticketless methods. |
| Third-party booking service | Choosing a checkout language, payment option or assistance offered by that seller. | Full payable amount, service fees, issuance timing, seat confirmation, delivery and the seller's change process. |
| Station machine or counter | Buying at a station, or discussing a more complicated itinerary with staff. | Opening hours, machine functions, accepted payment methods, queues and availability for your departure. |
For a fixed departure or adjacent seats, reserve ahead. A station purchase can suit a flexible same-day journey, but a particular train or seat may be unavailable. If you already booked online, check the collection instructions before buying another ticket.
ShinkansenTickets is a booking service. When booking here, review the journey options and conditions displayed before payment and use the support channel supplied with your order for order-specific questions. Railway operating rules and the seller's service conditions both matter.
Which official reservation service covers your journey?
Tokyo, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka and the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu corridor
SmartEX is the official online reservation service for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Its corridor includes Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Hiroshima and Hakata. Check the actual stations on your ticket: the Shinkansen station for Osaka is Shin-Osaka, not Osaka Station.
SmartEX registration includes a supported credit card and its authentication checks. An IC card is optional: eligible bookings can instead use the service's QR-Ticket or ticket collection. See the official registration and 3D Secure guidance. Card acceptance depends on the issuer and authentication; no seller can guarantee that every foreign-issued card will work.
West Japan and other itineraries
JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION offers basic fare tickets, limited-express tickets and selected passes for its supported routes. Check both the reservation area and the permitted pickup stations: collection locations vary by ticket type.
For a journey outside these services' coverage, use the relevant railway operator's reservation guidance. Do not assume that one JR account, QR code or pickup machine works for every Shinkansen line. For a trip involving transfers, check each segment and any local train connection separately.
How far in advance can you buy Shinkansen tickets?
Booking windows depend on the service and product. JR-WEST lists reserved-seat sales from 10:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9), one calendar month before boarding. For example, the normal opening for a 20 November journey is 20 October at 10:00 a.m. JST. Check the service's calendar for month-end dates. Source: JR-WEST reservation overview.
SmartEX accepts eligible reservations from 5:30 a.m. JST one year before the travel date, with limited availability and product exclusions. For reservations made more than a month ahead, the specific train and seat are not yet confirmed; SmartEX instructs passengers to check those details after 2:00 p.m. JST one month before departure. Oversized-baggage seats and certain other products are excluded from one-year advance reservations. Source: SmartEX reservation periods and conditions.
A third-party advance order follows that seller's stated issuance process. Check when the ticket will be issued, what happens if your requested train is unavailable, and whether a seat choice is a preference or a confirmed assignment. A seller's booking cutoff may also be earlier than the railway's cutoff.
How do you compare the complete ticket price?
Compare the final payable total for an equivalent journey. A Shinkansen journey normally involves a basic fare and a Shinkansen limited-express charge; these may be bundled in one product or represented by separate tickets. Seat class, reserved or non-reserved travel, travel date and product restrictions can affect the comparison.
- Use identical departure and arrival stations, date, train service and passenger ages.
- Check whether the quote covers the complete journey and any connecting local trains.
- Compare the payment currency, disclosed service fees, and your card issuer's possible currency-conversion charges.
- Read change and cancellation deadlines, railway charges, and any separate seller service conditions.
An official service is not automatically the cheapest for every product, and an agency's service fee is not a railway fare component. See the Shinkansen fare breakdown for more detail. Use live search for current availability and totals.
Will you receive a paper ticket, QR code or IC-card reservation?
Use the boarding method stated in your issued ticket instructions. The shape of a code does not establish what it does: a QR code can be a collection credential or a boarding credential.
| Method | What to do |
|---|---|
| Paper ticket collection | Collect at a supported station machine or counter with the credentials required by your seller. Allow time for opening hours, queues and transfers. |
| Boarding QR | Use the issued QR-Ticket according to the operator's instructions. An order email, payment receipt or pickup QR is not a substitute. |
| IC-linked reservation | Link the supported IC card to the eligible reservation before boarding. Simply owning or topping up a Suica or PASMO does not reserve a Shinkansen seat. |
For example, SmartEX explicitly describes its pickup code as a QR code or 16-digit code used to collect tickets. Its QR-Ticket boarding is a separate procedure. With SmartEX IC-card boarding, the Shinkansen fare is paid by the registered credit card at reservation, not taken from the IC card's stored balance.
If the boarding document has not arrived, check your order status and contact the seller before purchasing again. Read the ticket pickup and QR guide for collection planning.

What should families, luggage users and rail-pass holders check?
Seats together and large bags
Enter passenger ages correctly and confirm the required seats. A requested window seat or adjacent pair is not guaranteed until the issued reservation confirms it. The family and group booking guide explains how to plan seats together.
On the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen, baggage whose length + width + height totals more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm generally requires a seat with an oversized-baggage area. Check the railway's exceptions and other baggage limits, and reserve the correct seat product; a generic luggage preference does not itself reserve this space. Source: JR Central luggage guidance.
JAPAN RAIL PASS
Check pass coverage before buying a separate single ticket. The nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS alone does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho: pass holders need the designated [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket in addition to the valid pass. Regional passes have their own conditions. Do not assume a separately purchased ticket can be converted into pass travel. Source: official Nozomi/Mizuho pass rules.
A five-point check before you pay
- Journey: confirm the actual stations, date, train, transfers and passenger details.
- Product: confirm the class, seat status, luggage arrangements and any pass coverage.
- Total: check the complete amount, currency, included fare components and disclosed fees.
- Delivery: check issuance timing, collection location if required, and the boarding credential for each passenger.
- Support: save the seller's contact details and the change or cancellation deadlines before completing payment.
